The name Kottayam is believed to have its origins in the Malayalam words “kotta,” meaning fort, and “akam,” meaning inside, collectively suggesting “the interior of the fort.” The original town of Kottayam was established on the hilltop now identified as Kunnumpuram. This fortress was known as Thaliyil Kotta and was established by the local chieftain, often referred to as the Thekkumcoor RAJA. Over time, a small settlement emerged within the fort’s walls, and from the words “Kottackk Akam,” meaning “Inside the Fortress,” the present name, “Kottayam,” is believed to have evolved. It is a widely accepted notion that this name gradually transformed into its current form over time.
